SHIBU Mallick was arrested on Saturday for assaulting his wife while intoxicated, according to a police complaint.
Mallick, 46, was charged with assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.
On Monday afternoon, he appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho who imposed a $1,250 cash bail on the defendant.
At the hearing, Mallick was represented by Assistant Public Defender Karie Comstock while Assistant Attorney General Frances Demapan appeared for the government.
Mallick was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing and was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 11 at 9 a.m., and for an arraignment on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m.
According to the complaint against Mallick, his wife called the police after he punched her in the stomach. The wife told the police that he had been drinking.
She said on Oct. 1, prior to the incident, she came home around noon after taking her daughter to the emergency room of the hospital to be seen by a doctor.
She said Mallick started arguing with her, saying bad words. Between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., she said Mallick went to their bedroom and continued arguing with her then started pulling her leg, which made her fall off their bed.
While she was still on the floor, she said Mallick leaned over and punched her three times in the stomach. When she got up, she said Mallick held her behind her neck with his left hand and started shaking her and told her to leave the house. He then went outside the house.
Police arrested him on the same day around 5:42 p.m. and brought him to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.
