Election commission to resume voter registration drive in June

THE Commonwealth Election Commission will hold a voter registration drive every Wednesday in June.

The CEC announced on Monday that the drive will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following dates and locations:

• June 4 – Santa Remedios Social Hall

• June 11 – Kagman Community Center

• June 18 – Carolinian Affairs Office

• June 20 – Koblerville Youth Center

• June 25 – San Vicente Youth Center

A similar drive was conducted on Rota on May 13, 2022, on Tinian on Wednesday, April 27, and in various precincts on Saipan every Saturday this past February.

The 2022 general election is set for Nov. 8, Tuesday.

As of April 12, 2022, the Commonwealth had 17,731 registered voters, according to the election commission.

To be eligible to vote, an individual must be at least 18 years old on or before election day, is a domicile of the Commonwealth, has resided in the CNMI for 120 days prior to election day, is not serving a sentence for a felony conviction, has not been declared by a court to be judicially insane, and is either a citizen or national of the U.S. as defined in the CNMI Constitution.

Previously registered voters who have failed to vote in the 2018 and 2020 general elections must re-register to be eligible to vote in the 2022 general election.

For first-time voters, they must provide a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate.

Request for absentee ballots will commence on Aug. 25.

The last day for voters to register for the general election will be on Sept. 9.

The first day of early voting for the Northern Islands will commence on Sept. 23, while Saipan, Tinian, and Rota will have to wait until Nov. 1 to vote early.

The deadline for absentee voters to submit applications to vote electronically or by mail will be on Oct. 14.

Designation of polling places and distribution of listing will be set on Nov. 1.

The last day of early voting will be on Nov. 7.

For candidates, the last day to establish residency requirements and the first day for submission for nominating petition and candidacy will be on July 11.

The last day of submission of nomination petitions and candidacy documents will be on Aug. 10.

The last day for the election commission’s action on nominating petitions and candidacy documents will be on Sept. 23.

All campaign materials must be removed from public places by Nov. 23.

Campaign financial statements must be submitted by Dec. 28.

Elected officials will take office on Jan. 9, 2023.
