Eledui questions pardon to drug convicts

Eledui raised these after President Johnson Toribiong granted executive clemency to convicts found guilty of drug trafficking.

“These people should be imprisoned for live and should serve time for the rest of their lives. They deal with trafficking of a controlled substance and are major cases but somehow we can easily pardon them,” Eledui said during a Senate session.

Sen. Joel Toribiong, chair of the committee and the president’s brother said that order of pardon is the leader of the country’s prerogative.

He said the president cannot be subjected toa public hearing.

“The recommendation from the parole board whether negative or positive but if the president of the republic wants to sign an order of pardon, he can sign it,” Toribiong said.

Eledui however said that he did not want to conduct an oversight hearing with the president’s office but rather with the parole board.

He said the parole board is the one making the recommendations on who should be pardoned or not.

Eledui was pertaining to the granting of pardon toKazuma Takadafor his conviction ranging from several counts of assault and battery, grand larceny, forgery, trafficking of a controlled substance and threatening.

Another convict was also given full and complete pardon,Carlos Wasisang who was convicted of possession of methamphetamine and attempted murder.
