Envoy to Taiwan list of candidates submitted to Senate

President Johnson Toribiong in an interview said that the short list will enable Senate to make their inputs on his choices.

The president did not reveal the names of the candidates but told reporters that the nominee will be “ a college graduate who never lost an election, someone who speaks English properly and someone who can represent Palau in the international arena.”

Toribiong said the nominee will be disclosed upon his return from Abu Dhabi where he is attending the first Pacific-Arab summit.

The ambassadorial position was left vacant following Henry’s resignation.

Henry was involved in the controversy surrounding the UK Investment Holdings Limited.

President Johnson Toribiong accepted yesterday the resignation of Palau Ambassador to Taiwan Jackson Henry.

Henry said that his reason for resigning was because hisintegrity has irreparably damaged by the false advertisements placed by Morris Davidson in the Palau newspapers.

He said because of the allegations thrown against him by Davidson, his position as the ambassador has been ineffective.

Henry and Palau’s honorary consul to Malaysia Davidson were earlier placed under administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation being conducted by the task force created to look into alleged fraud into the dealings of the controversial UK-Investment Holdings Limited.

Davidson after a few days was also relieved of his post.

Henry has filed a libel suit against Davidson and is seeking damages for what he claims an intentional slandering of his good name and damaging his career as a diplomat.

The two exchanged heated and conflicting accusations and carried on the debates using advertisements published in newspapers. The spat was apparently due to exchange of monies and the involvement in the nonexistent project in Angaur.

Henry figured in the issue as the broker between UKHIL and the Angaur clans in the lease of lands.

In Davidson’s answer and counterclaim to Henry’s civil action suit is seeking damages too claiming that the charges made against him were false and defamatory.
