Finance: Taxpayers will receive prepaid card in mail

(MV) — The Department of Finance has announced on its website the availability of the CNMI Local Stimulus.

“We view this as a special opportunity to help our islands during these difficult times,” the department stated.

“This money is to be spent within the CNMI for the purpose of helping our local economy. Each taxpayer will receive a prepaid card in the mail. Instructions with how to activate the card will be included in the envelope. The prepaid card has geo-restrictions in place so it won’t be able to be used outside of the CNMI. ATM cash withdrawal won’t work either. You are welcome to use the card at any of the local business on island that accept Visa card payments.”

Who is eligible?

Anyone who filed their 2020 individual taxes in the CNMI.

How much do I get?

Each taxpayer will receive $500 plus an additional $500 per dependent included on your 2020 tax filing.

Will I receive a check or can I request a check?

No. The funds are added to a prepaid card, and will be mailed to you.

Can I withdraw cash from prepaid card with an ATM machine

No. The funds must be spent from the prepaid card directly at local businesses who accept Visa.

Can I spend my money outside the CNMI?

No. These funds are for helping our local economy. The prepaid card is restricted to be spent only at businesses within the CNMI.

Can I spend the money through an online business?

No. The money must be spent within the CNMI. However, if it is a locally based online company, you can use your card with them if their credit card processing service is CNMI-based.

What happens if I lose my card?

Replacements can be requested via email at stimulus@dof.gov.mp. Please allow Department of Finance time to verify your request.

I didn’t receive the correct amount of funds on my card.

Can I spend the money through online business within the CNMI?
