(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency) — Based on information received from the National Weather Service on Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center-State Warning Point, a flood watch is in effect on Saipan, Tinian and Rota through Wednesday afternoon.
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible, and excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may also occur in poor drainage and urban areas.
Due to the proximity of a tropical disturbance, which is currently situated near Saipan, more substantial rainfall is anticipated the next few days.
Satellite analysis, model guidance and previous trends indicate the possibility for rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches through Wednesday. Localized training cells or rain bands can bring up to 4 to 6 inches of rainfall.
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is advising residents that flooding can become life-threatening very quickly. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Monitor conditions in your area and the latest forecasts and be prepared to take action if flash flood warnings are issued.
