“I decided to raise this issue now in light of the imminent danger posed to the people in Chuuk by a potential oil-spill as documented in a 2008 Earth Watch Study which predicted that the more than sixty wrecks have 10-15 years before they will succumb to corrosion and spill their oily contents into the lagoon and surrounding marine ecosystem,” the president wrote.
The wrecks have earned considerable significance to the people of Chuuk and their Japanese friends, wreck divers and under-water enthusiasts, marine scientists and the evolving marine life that have made homes on most of these wrecks.
Several informal reportings and local witnesses have pointed out that the oil leak is already happening.
