Fundraiser for Junior Statesmen students, This Friday

The Summer Schools take place at four of the U.S.’ most prestigious Universities:Stanford, Yale, Princeton and Georgetown. The Summer Schools serve as an excellent academic, social, and intellectual preparation for success in college and for a lifetime of active and effective leadership in public affairs. While the U.S. Department of the Interior offers four full scholarships each year to students from Palau, there are four students remaining who are eager to attend but who still need funds to cover their entire tuition of $4,500 plus airfare. These four students are:Warang Ulechong, Aspecia Rdang, Andrew Ridep and Karl Baysa.Although raising this amount is a very ambitious goal within such a short timeframe, they are joining forces and working hard to try to raise enough funds so each of them can attend. They believe that their efforts will be worth it even if only one of them is able to attend. They need to raise approximately $6,500 per student by June 15th.

Letters have gone out to all of Palau’s Senators, Delegates, Ministers, Judges, President Toribiong and Vice President Mariur as well as other leaders in Palau. Many letters have also gone out to various local businesses. So far, donations have been pledged by Minister Jackson Ngiraingas, Vice Speaker Alexander Merep and Delegate Kalistus Ngirturong. They have also received donations from R&C Bait and Tackle, Thomas Schubert of Palau Shop and First Commercial Bank. They are asking the public to stop by and support their efforts by donating.Even a small amount of money can make a big difference. They will be holding a fundraising event on Friday, June 11, 2010 starting at 1pm at the Ministry of Education parking lot in Koror.A local NGO called PEACE (Pacific Endowment for Art, Culture and Environment) is helping the students with fundraising and will receive donations so that all donations can qualify for a tax refund. All donations made will be acknowledged via a thank you message in the local newspapers and on local TV late June 2010.Donations for these students will help insure that the future leadership of Palau will be effective, ethical and committed. For any further information, contact Tarita Holm, Palau Junior Statesmen Coordinator at 488-8287 (home), 779-8635 (cell) or via email at [email protected].
