GMH board approves $2.8 million write-off in collections

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Guam Memorial Hospital wants to write off $2.8 million in an effort to clean up aging reports, according to the hospital’s chief financial officer.

“This new batch of patient accounts totaling, … $2.877,992.57 for 1,049 patient accounts. We are requesting the board to approve the write off for these, these are write offs for various accounts including Medicare, SelectCare, Staywell and other commercial accounts,” CFO Yuka Hechanova said during GMH’s recent board meeting.

The accounts are from 2009 to 2018, which have exceeded the timeframe for collection.

“Most of these are including bills that are beyond our timeframe to bill and even to collect and so we would like the board to approve us to write off these accounts,” Hechanova said.

Hechanova presented the information in a bid to gain the board’s approval to adopt Resolution 2024-07 relative to patient receivables which also included a corrective action plan.

“So we can prevent these kinds of things from being written off and we will shore up our follow up side to make sure we monitor these accounts and we have put several procedures and staff in place to make sure that we don’t see these types of write offs in the future,” Hechanova said.

This is the second resolution requesting to write-off $2.8 million.

“We are trying to work on this in order to facilitate the movement of the aging report. So that every month we bring something to the board so that we can slowly chip away at the aging,” Hechanova said.

The resolution passed with a majority vote.
