Governor appoints Tofila as new Commerce secretary

GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres on Tuesday appointed Edward Tofila M. Deleon Guerrero as the new secretary of the Department of Commerce.

The current director of corporate registry, Deleon Guerrero was named acting Commerce secretary following the resignation of Mark Rabauliman who is now the director of the economic development division.

Deleon Guerrero’s appointment as Commerce secretary requires the advice and consent of the Senate.

The governor told Deleon Guerrero that he is required to file a statement of financial interest with the Office of the Public Auditor, in compliance with 1 CMC §8511.

He must also submit a copy of his résumé, a statement of financial interest (stamped received by the Office of the Public Auditor), police clearance, drug test receipt and drug test result to the governor’s office for submission to the Senate.

“Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios and I are confident that your previous service in the government will be an asset to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Your willingness to serve our people is most appreciated,” the governor told Deleon Guerrero who has served the CNMI in various capacities over the years.

The governor also informed Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider about the nomination of Deleon Guerrero, saying he and the lt. governor are confident that Deleon Guerrero is qualified to fulfill the vital responsibilities of the Department of Commerce.
