Governor commits to healthier living

GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres, 42, is turning over a new leaf and focusing on his health.

“Why am I doing it? Because I have six kids. My oldest is turning 16. My youngest is turning 6. My dad has left. My mom is still here… Every day, I thank our Lord for having my mom here and having both of my in-laws, my wife, and my kids. I realize, too, that [regarding] my health, I’m the only one that can make changes,” Torres said.

As a public official, he added, he has attended several funerals and have learned to appreciate life more.

After talking it over with his wife, first lady Diann T. Torres, he decided to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

He noted that when he first met his wife, he was 145 pounds.

“I’ll tell you my weight later on,” he added with a chuckle.

The couple have been together for 18 years and married for 16 of those years.

“Don’t expect me to get a six-pack any time soon, but [I am] more cognizant [of] eating a little bit healthier, obviously eating less, and just prioritizing my health,” he said.

The governor said he has been hitting the gym every morning, waking up as early as 4:30 a.m., often when his family is still in bed.

“I’m not here to ask anybody to be healthier, but I want to better myself and to start leading by example when it comes to my health. So, it’s going to take a while, but you know what? I’ve been getting an outpouring of support from…different organizations, different folks in supporting me through this journey, and so I look forward to it.

“Again, I’m not here to educate people about their health because I’m working on mine, but it feels good and just knowing my priority is making sure now that I eat healthier and exercise as much as I can, and it’s been good… If you have some 10 minutes, do some walking or exercise or whatever it is. Stay healthy, Marianas,” he added.
