Guam DOL warns of Facebook grant scam

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Guam Department of Labor has issued a warning about a scam on Facebook falsely claiming to offer grants.

The posts are not affiliated with GDOL or any legitimate government program. GDOL urged residents to exercise caution.

“This is a scam. The Guam Department of Labor does not offer any kind of individual grant assistance through Facebook,” GDOL Director David Dell’Isola stated in a release.

“We want to make it absolutely clear that these messages are not coming from our office, and we urge the public to be vigilant and avoid providing any personal information,” Dell’Isola added.

The scams appear to come from unofficial pages or individuals posing as government representatives, according to GDOL. They claim that users are eligible for federal or labor-related grants. Some use the Department of Labor’s name, the phrase located in Guam, or similar wording to appear credible, GDOL added.

“Anyone who encounters these posts is strongly encouraged to report them to the Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 671-475-2720, especially if they’ve been contacted directly or asked to provide sensitive information,” the GDOL release stated.

“For accurate and official information about Guam Department of Labor programs and services, residents should only refer to the department’s verified website at dol.guam.gov or contact GDOL directly at 671-475-7000/1,” the release added.
