HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — If you have a relative who lives in the continental U.S. or Hawaii, who you haven’t seen in a while because of the high cost of travel, now is the time to let them know that they can come home in time to celebrate Guam’s 80th Liberation with discounted airfares from United Airlines.
“Some CHamorus haven’t been home for over 50 years. The steep cost of travel have discouraged the return home for thousands of our people. Very few who witnessed the liberation are still alive. The excitement is palpable,” Guam Visitors Bureau President Carl Gutierrez told The Guam Daily Post on Sunday.
The campaign called, “Homecoming” was developed through the partnership of GVB and United, to target the 150,000 Guamanians and Micronesians residing stateside.
The program hopes to attract at least 2.5% of this population, or roughly 4,000, with discounted airfare.
“For this particular promotion, GVB encouraged UA to offer a discount to encourage our people to come home to celebrate the 80th Liberation. To make it more enticing, GVB is matching UA’s 15% for a total 30% discount on airfare from the U.S., including Hawaii,” GVB said.
Tickets must be purchased through the United Airlines Guam ticketing office between April 15 and June 1 and travel must be from July 1 through Aug 15, to qualify for the discounted airfare.
“Reservations will be made directly through the dedicated email for the promo at guam80thliberation@united.com,” said the GVB’s Homecoming campaign page.
“If tourism indeed works for the benefit of our people, then we should show it. Many have been priced out of paradise. Bring the CHamoru spirit back,” Gutierrez said.
