CLOSE to 100 children who are participating in the Division of Youth Services’ after-school program enjoyed a mini-concert that featured Hawaiian singer Baba B and guitarist Dennis Nakamoto at the Kagman Community Center on Wednesday.
Baba B has performed live not only for his fans in Hawaii but also in the other Pacific islands, including Tahiti, Saipan, Guam, as well as in California and Nevada.
His mini-concert for the children was a project of DYS and the Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture and was made possible through a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
DYS Administrator Vivian Sablan said that Baba B’s mini-concert was a special treat for the division’s after-school program, staff, volunteers, interns and parent advocates.
She said they were very fortunate to have Baba B perform for the children.
Parker Yobei, the Arts Council executive director, said Baba B was on island for a show at Jonny’s Bar & Grill in Garapan.
A musical artist himself, Yobei said he and Baba B have been friends “since way back.”
With Baba B on island, Yobei said he suggested a mini-concert for the children who had never been to a concert before.
During his performance, Baba B reminded the children that “you are the future.” He encouraged them to pursue their dreams, never quit and “always believe in yourself.” He also told them that it is very important to love and be kind to everyone.
“Give the best version of yourselves each and every day,” he said.
