BOARD of Education Chairman Andew Orsini said he and his family join members of the community in mourning the passing of local historian, author and educator Samuel F. McPhetres.
In a statement on Monday, Orsini said McPhetres “was a longtime educator with Northern Marianas College. Throughout his years, he was well admired and loved by all his students.”
He added that McPhetres “was remarkable in his teachings, especially NMI history.”
“His heart is with the CNMI and its people,” Orsini said. “He was a very profound educator, and his former wife, Agnes M. McPhetres is the longest serving NMC president and is recognized as its ‘president emeritus.’ My prayers and condolence go out to their family.”
McPhetres passed away at 8 p.m., Saturday at the Commonwealth Health Center. He was 82.
