HOD requests Toribiong to prioritize Babeldaob development

In House Joint Resolution 8-38-11S, the lawmakers called the attention of the Executive Branch in their lack of a unified economic plan setting priorities for development around Babeldaob.

The states in Babeldaob are Ameliik, Ngaraard, Ngardmau, Ngaremlengui, Ngarchelong and Ngatpang, Airai, Ngchesar, Melekeok and Ngiwal.

“Creating such priorities would assist in the creation of a strong economy for the Republic as a whole by allowing each state to play a particular role in the republic’s economic development,” the resolution said.

The delegates in the adoption of the resolution stated that the states closer to Koror such as Airai, Ngchesar, Melekeok and Ngiwal will receive priority for development of commercial activity while the rest of the states in Babeldaob shall receive priority for development of aquaculture and agriculture.

The resolution further added that the president should invite investors to pursue development projects in accordance with the development policy.

Earlier Toribiong proposed a cut in the state governments’ budget and asked them to be self-sustaining but governors opposed the slash saying that it will affect most of the services.

Although the Compact Road has been completed, Babeldaob remained underdeveloped.

The Compact Road was expected to open up the area to commercial possibilities since it is now connected to Koror.
