HOD to tackle bill on calibration of weights and measures

The HOD will consider House Bill No. 7-103-11S-HD1 in today’s July regular session.The measure said that there are no laws pertaining to the calibration of weights and measures used within Palau for the purpose of commerce and trade.The proposed measure said that there is no assurances that weight and measures in commercial and governmental services within the Republic of Palau are suitable for their intended use, properly installed , accurate and so maintained by their owner or user.The measure penalizes any persons who misrepresent quantity and pricing.According to the measure any person who violates the provision will be guilty of misdemeanor and shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be fined not more than $1,000 or sentenced to not more than 30 days in jail.The measure also stated that the Minister of Commerce and Trade or his or her designee shall collect for each annual inspection of a scale, weight or measuring device a fee as established in the schedule of fees.The minister will also request appropriations for the establishment and operation of  Bureau of Weights and Measures starting in Fiscal Year 2009.
