Hofschneider to chair Tinian fiscal affairs panel

THE chairman of the Tinian and Aguiguan Legislative Delegation, Sen. Karl King-Nabors, on Tuesday appointed Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider as chairman of the delegation’s Committee on Fiscal Affairs & Resident Department Heads.

King-Nabors made the appointment ahead of the delegation’s deliberation on Tinian’s budget for fiscal year 2024.

In his memorandum, King-Nabors said the committee’s first order of business is to review the Second Senatorial District’s FY 2024 budget as set forth in Gov. Arnold I. Palacios’ budget proposal.

He said the panel may require the assistance of Legislative Bureau staff including its fiscal analyst, Dave Demapan, in reviewing the budget, making recommendations, if any, and reporting back to the delegation the committee’s findings.

In his FY 2024 budget submission, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios proposed $4.6 million for Tinian. The island’s current budget is $7.3 million.

The governor’s budget proposal reduces the Tinian Mayor’s Office budget to $111,000 from $2.7 million because, he said, the Torres administration had already wired $2.7 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to the Tinian treasury in December 2022.
