Hundreds benefitted from free medical services

Lieutenant Commander Michael Termini, public health doctor, said there were many people who trooped at the cultural center during the first day of clinic on Tuesday.

“The turnout is fantastic we got off a little bit exhausted mainly because this is the first time the team had come up together to do this here in Palau. By the afternoon we received a lot of patients and kids.” Termini said in an interview.

He said most of the health problems they encounter are muscle aches and pains, diabetes, high blood pressure and falling teeth.

Termini said that the team is comprised of Army doctor, Internal medicine doctor, pediatrician, OPG doctor, dental hygienists among others.

He said the most popular services they are providing are eye glasses and dental clinics.

The team is giving free medicines as well as prescriptions and referrals for those patients needing to have a follow-up care.

Aside from humanitarian mission, Sailors and Marines also participated in several community service projects around the Island including school projects.

“We have a Navy Engineering team or the Seabees that are going around and identifying some projects like painting basketball court and building project.”Termini added

The US Navy team onboard the U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet Command Ship USS Blue Ridge (LCC19), anchored off the coast on Monday for the four- day visit and humanitarian missions in Palau.

The fifth in a series of annual U.S Pacific Fleet humanitarian and civic assistance endeavors, Pacific Partnership 2010 is aimed at strengthening regional relationship with host nations and partner nations.

The visit is also mark the first time that a Pacific partnership visit has come to the Micronesian Island.

On Saturday the US Navy ship is scheduled to leave the Island.

The US Navy team next humanitarian mission will be in Papua New Guinea

Meanwhile, the reception of USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) was held on Wednesday night onboard the ship.

President Toribiong along with other Palau officials and diplomats attended the event. They enjoyed the night with live band music played by US navy team.

This is the first time the USS Blue Ridge visited Palau.
