In Fiji, 106 arrested overnight for Covid-19 breaches; now totals 1,300

Fiji’s Police Commissioner Brig. Gen. Sitiveni Qiliho confirmed that of those 106, 88 people were arrested for breach of social gathering.

“The Northern Division recorded 39 of the 88 arrests, while the Eastern Division recorded 20 cases, West and South 13 cases each and Central Division — three,” Qiliho said.

According to police, curfew breaches accounted for 18 arrests, with the Eastern Division recording 11, five in the Southern Division and two in the Western Division.

“Of the 106 arrests made, 14 were juveniles that breached both curfew and social gathering restrictions.”

To date, a total of 1,300 people have been arrested for breaching restrictions put in place to assist in Covid-19 containment efforts in the country.

All arrests made have been in regard to breaking curfew hours, social gatherings and a breach of isolation and lockdown regulations.

Five police officers have also been arrested during the operation period to date.
