Judge denies ex-pastor modified sentence for 2019 sexual assault

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — An ex-pastor convicted of sexually assaulting a teen will start his 14-month sentence later this month after a judge denied a request to reduce the sentence.

On Tuesday, Superior Court of Guam Judge Vernon Perez issued an order stating ex-pastor Renato Bosi will serve 14 months at the Department of Corrections starting on Sept. 29.

Bosi was sentenced in 2019 for two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct as a first-degree felony, two counts of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct as a misdemeanor and child abuse as a misdemeanor.

Bosi however, after being sentenced, appealed to the Supreme Court of Guam, who upheld the conviction and sentence.

Following the higher court’s decision, Bosi requested a modified sentence to allow him to take care of his wife, who has medical issues. Additionally, Bosi asked if he can serve a house arrest term or only serve time at night.

Perez, in his order, explained he was not convinced there are any new circumstances that would warrant a change to the original sentence, especially considering Bosi has already benefited from having a reduced sentence.

Originally, Bosi faced up to 40 years imprisonment. However, he was sentenced to lesser included offenses than he was initially charged with, Perez stated.

Since being sentenced in 2019, Bosi has remained out of prison pending the outcome of his appeal and new motion, but has during hearings been warned by Perez to be prepared to serve his sentence as it was unlikely Bosi’s time would be reduced to zero.

According to court documents, Bosi, who was a pastor with the Living Lighthouse Church in Barrigada, was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl known to him by touching her inappropriately on multiple occasions.
