Kalabera Cave is open again

THE construction project at the site is still ongoing, but tourists and local residents can now enter the Kalabera Cave, acting Division of Parks and Recreation Director Ray Sablan said.

“For the safety of the community, the site is fenced and gated, but visitors can come inside to visit the cave,” he added.

He said the fence will protect visitors from “grazing cows that have escaped nearby farms.”

The $185,521 construction contract for the Kalabera Cave project was awarded to HBR International and work at the site started on July 13, 2022.

The project is funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.

“We are making sure that the project will be completed on time,” Sablan said.

Variety also learned that the Kalabera Cave will be closed again in March for the next phase of the construction project which is the construction of a walkway or ramp.

It was in September 2022 when the Capital Improvement Program under the CNMI Office of the Governor announced the cave’s closure while “repairs and improvements” were being completed.
