Kim mural unveiled

According to PCS Education Officer, Tublai Ililau, the “Kim er Belau” campaign began last year.  It is a campaign to protect all species of giant clams found in Palau.

“We hope to make people aware of the human activities that directly or indirectly causes irreversible damages to our marine environments,” she said. “Damages to our marine environments spell death for the giant clams.”The mural, she said, serves to remind people of what the underwater world should look like from the perspective of the giant clam.PCS had made arrangements with the Ministry of Education to place the mural on one of Palau High School’s buildings – one that is visible from the main road.  According to Ililau, PCS contracted Dave Ngirailemesang, a local artist from Tachukal, Ngkeklau, to paint the mural, which he completed last Monday.“We hope that the mural would inspire people to be more conscious of the environment,” Ililau added, “And that they join our campaign to protect the giant clams.”The Kim er Belau campaign promotes adherence to conservation laws (traditional and legal acts), practice of practical and environmentally friendly use of land, practice of sustainable harvesting and use of natural resources, and development of feasible and effective conservation management plans.Ililau further added that the success of the Kim er Belau campaign is attributed to the generous support and assistance of businesses, organizations, and commitments of community members who continue to make every effort to keep Palau’s natural environments prestine.
