King-Hinds may run for US Congress

COMMONWEALTH Ports Authority Chairwoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds said she may run for U.S. delegate next year.

“I’m willing to consider it,” the local attorney and community advocate said.

There are many people who have been asking her to run, she said, but she must first consult her family and friends.

Two local Republicans have already expressed their support for King-Hinds.

Rep. Joseph Leepan Guerrero said she is an excellent choice for the NMI Republican Party.

Rep. John Paul Sablan said although anyone can run regardless of professional or educational background, electing a lawyer like King-Hinds, who has been serving the public for many years, is something people should consider next year.

A graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, King-Hinds has her own law office.

She has a master’s degree in human resource management, with honors, from the University of Hawaii, and is a political science graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.

She is a former legal counsel of the NMI Settlement Fund and was the chair of the Northern Marianas College board of regents from 2002 to 2006. She also served as executive director of the Tinian Youth Center and chief of staff of the Tinian mayor’s office.

From 2000 to 2002, she was the special assistant for projects and community services of the Office of the Lt. Governor and has served as member of the Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission.

As CPA board chairwoman, she also  serves as first vice president/secretary for the Association of Pacific Ports.

King-Hinds has organized numerous activities relating to youth development, domestic violence awareness and community advocacy.

She also serves as the co-chairperson of the Friends of San Jose Church Tinian, a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds to rebuild the Tinian San Jose Church, which was destroyed by Super Typhoon Yutu.

The current CNMI congressional delegate, Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, is being urged by the NMI Democratic Party to run for governor next year.
