Kiribati, Nauru representatives to join Micronesian presidential summit

A representative from Kiribati and a representative from Nauru will participate in the summit that will bring Federated States of Micronesia President Emanuel Mori and Republic of the Marshall Islands President Jurelang Zedkaia to the capital of Palau in Koror.

President Johnson Toribiong said these two nations were interested in joining the summit and participate in talks on various areas of cooperation affecting the Micronesian region.

Kiribati, like the four other nations has few natural resources and relies mostly on fishing and the sale of fishing rights.

Nauru’s only economically significant natural resources are phosphates, and fisheries particularly for tuna.

Micronesian area nations who will be holding a two two-day sessions starting Thursday next week.

Preparations are underway for the meeting which will also be concluded a day before the Micronesian Games. The four leaders and a representative from Nauru will be the special geust of honors of Palau when the games officially opens on August 1.

The guest leaders will then fly together to Vanuatu for the Pacific Islands Forum.

On the agenda for the gathering of leaders are climate change, fiber optic, fisheries and tourism among others.
