Korean company wants to open factory on Saipan

A SOUTH Korean company that manufactures mobile devices wants to open a factory on Saipan.

GN Factory Co., Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Soung Kyu Bak and company director, Kim Woon Ki, were on Saipan to present their plan to establish assembly lines for mobile devices, such as cell phones, tablets and laptops.

They met with acting Gov. David M. Apatang and senior policy advisor Tina Sablan on Tuesday to share information about their company, their products and their plan to build an assembly line on Saipan.

Soung Kyu Bak said GN Factory plans to import semiconductors and other parts from Taiwan, Japan and China, and assemble devices on island for export to Indonesia, Malaysia, Dubai and European countries.

He said they are assembling mobile devices in Korea, and their head office is located in Gyeonggi-do with factories in Chungbuk, Eumseong, Bucheon and Yongin.

A U.S. citizen, Soung Kyu Bak said he has visited Saipan eight times since 2015.

He said his proposed factory on Saipan will not need a lot of workers, and that he intends to hire U.S. workers who, according to Kim Woon Ki, will be sent to Korea to undergo training and acquire technical skills.

He said their company specializes in customizable mobile phones, which allow users to create their own platforms based on their specific needs and preferences. That’s what sets their company apart from other mobile device manufacturers, he added.
