One of the lanes in a section of the Compact Road in Ngeremlengui State, near Dr. Emais Roberts farm, was nearly blocked off this week when a portion of a hill adjacent to it fell on it.
Public Works crews have been to the section of the road and have cleared it. However, the land continues to slide unto the road each time there is a drizzle.“The Public Works crew is up against a battle with mother nature,” said one motorist. “If this were a game and we could schedule the rains, I think the Public Works crew would be winning; however, as soon they clear it and leave, the land begins to slide down.”The motorist said that he has seen the Public Works crew at the landslide site in Ngeremlengui more than three times since last week and they are “prudent and diligent in doing their job.”One of the crew said that it takes a little time for the crew to get to the site from Koror and sometimes “people think we are not doing our jobs.”“We do go and clear the landslides when they are reported,” he said. “But sometimes, after we clear the dirt of the road and leave, the hillside falls again.”The Public Works relies on the people to report incidents of landslides or fallen trees that get unto the road.“We have to rely on motorists to report such incidents,” the crewman said. “We are grateful for all the reports we have received and continue to rely on the support of the public in order to keep the Compact Road safe to drive on.”All motorists on are warned to drive cautiously during rainy days, especially when passing along hillsides that line the Compact Road. Further, everyone is asked to report any incidents of Compact Road landslides to the Office of the Public Works in order that its crew would be able to clear them to ensure road safety.
