Liberation Day float competition winners receive prizes

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang on Monday handed the prizes to the winners of this year’s Liberation Day parade float competition.

The governor’s special assistant for military affairs, Glenna Palacios, and the staff of the Commonwealth Bureau of Military Affairs received the $5,000 grand prize for winning the competition. Their float depicted the progress of the NMI community from Camp Susupe during World War II to the present day.

Joining Palacios to receive the cash prize were Capt. Kimberly Hofschneider of the Indo-Pacific Command, Jocelyn Palacios, Vivian Taitano and Teisha Efraim.

Department of Commerce’s Tona Tudela and Glennis Gamboa-Licop, and Department of Public Works’ Anthony Dizon and Zack Blas received their share of the $4,000 second  prize. Also tied for second place were the Office of Aging and Diaspora of the FSM in Saipan. Each received $1,000.

Splitting the $3,000 prize for third place were  Marianas Variety and Triple J.

Variety sales staff Jeanette Sarabia, Diane Lumapas and Gwen Sandig received MV’s share of the prize while Triple J’s Mario Valentino, Fred Camacho and Saudia Ramos received theirs.

Highlands Lawn Care co-owner Emy Sablan received the $2,000 fourth prize for their Kirida float.

Office of the Governor’s Vicky T. Guerrero, Lucy Aldan and Michelle Tagabuel received $1,000 for placing fifth while Victory Chapel’s Martin Mettao received the $500 sixth prize for their 180 Production Victory Chapel’s float.

Mayor Apatang congratulated the winners and thanked them for contributing to the success of this year’s Liberation Day celebration despite the still ongoing challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Liberation Day festivities brought joy and happiness to all the residents and visitors, the mayor added.

The winning float participants, for their part, thanked the mayor and the rest of the organizing committee for giving them the opportunity to showcase their creativity.
