NOUMEA (Pacnews) — Canadian mining giant Inco has signed a $1.3 billion deal to create the world’s largest nickel mine in New Caledonia.
The plant, in Goro in the south of New Caledonia’s main island, will have a yearly production capacity of 54,000 tons of nickel and 54,000 tons of cobalt.
Goro Nickel plant project chairman Pierre Alla signed the deal with Brisbane architect firm Bechtel, Technip et Hatch, to design and build the plant. Another nickel mining project is also underway in the northern province of New Caledonia with another Canadian company, Falconbridge.
