Police Capt. Pete Leon Guerrero told the Variety that the officer survival course is an important training that every police officer has to go through.
Leon Guerrero said the police officers at the juvenile detention center who took the Officer Survival 1 certification undergo training in several areas.
“The officers are oriented about appearances and impressions on the image that they should portray to the public,” Leon Guerrero said.
He said the image of the police is being tarnished by some officers who violate the law, but if one officer violate the law, it is not fair to label the whole department as violators.
“We train the officers on how to improve the image of the police officers to the community,” he said.
The officers are also trained on the techniques of how to escort individuals from one point to another without putting their lives in jeopardy, and on the techniques of using pepper mace, expandable baton, as well as polish up on modern defensive training systems to have an up to date and practical defensive training.
“The 13 officers are the first batch. The training started last Monday,” Leon Guerrero said.
He added that another batch of officers from the correction facility will undergo the same training at the end of this month.
“We conduct these certifications at least twice a year and the second batch will have about 15 officers,” Leon Guerrero said.
Conducting the Officer Survival 1 course certification with Leon Guerrero are two other instructors — Police Officer Nick Leon Guerrero and Sgt. John Rebuenog.
