1st local medical practitioner gets recognition

The resolution expressed the council’s “sincerest commendation’ to the family of Cabrera and pays tribute to his “many lifetime accomplishments and contribution to the people of the CNMI.”

Cabrera had a promising future when he began a career inside the Camp Susupe compound at age 14, the resolution stated.

He studied at the Navy Medical School on Guam from 1949 to 1951.

In 1951, Cabrera left for Fiji to continue his medical education and he graduated on Dec. 19, 1954.

Upon his return to Saipan, Cabrera practiced medicine at the Dr. Torres Hospital and the Commonwealth Health Center until his retirement in March 1994.

“The people of the CNMI will forever remember and be grateful to Dr. Calistro C. Cabrera for his many contributions to our commonwealth,” the resolution stated.

Cabrera said he was very happy to be recognized on his birthday.

Close to a hundred of his immediate family members as well as other relatives and friends attended the celeberation.

Carmen Cabrera, the doctor’s niece, said her uncle never married but has been the “father of many” in their family.

Arlen B. Cabrera Torres said the doctor “deserved” the recognition because of his untiring efforts to help the community.”

Former Rep. Tony S. Guerrero said Dr. Cabrera “has contributed a lot to the community.”

He said he hopes the Saipan Courtyard Leadership project will not only recognize  former and current leaders of the islands but also local professionals who have accomplished lot for the betterment of the community.
