On Feb. 11, the Saipan Zoning Board will convene to decide on the proposed text amendments to the Saipan Zoning Law of 2008.
Aside from residential and commercial structure, the zoning will also affect farms and related agricultural uses.
For instance, section 405 of the law mandates one animal unit or a 1,000 square meter of land to have only one horse, two cattle, four calves, five pigs, seven goats, or 200 chickens or other poultry.
In the same section, a new clause was inserted identifying areas where aquaculture is permitted.
“Areas most suitable for commercial aquaculture in Saipan are Obyan/Ladder Beach and the Lalau/Tururam area,” part of the proposed amendment stated.
Small-scale aquaculture will be allowed under certain guidelines like having 5,000-gallon production tanks, among other conditions.
