Wiseman required Defang to appear again in court for his arraignment on June 28 before remanding him to the custody of the Department of Corrections.
Defang attempted to hit Ik Whan Choo, a customer at San Jose Market, with a metal bar, authorities said.
At the time of the incident, Defang was drunk. He kicked taxicabs in the parking lot and challenged some customers to a fight.
A responding officer pepper sprayed Defang to neutralize him.
Authorities also recovered the metal bar which he tried to use against Choo.
