35 MPs sign gun declaration

HONIARA (Pacnews) — Seventeen government ministers have signed the public declaration that neither they, nor members of their families possess guns and ammunition.

They include Prime Minister Allan Kemakeza and his deputy, Snyder Rini.

As of Monday, 35 of the 50 members of parliament have signed the declaration in support of the desire by all peace loving Solomon Islanders for the country to be gun free.

The MPs also acknowledged efforts of the Peace Monitoring Council to have all guns returned by the amnesty deadline of May 31.

Only 15 members of parliament have yet to sign the declaration.

The Solomon Islands Christian Association has also pitched in to support government’s plan to return all weapons to the Peace Monitoring Council. The Association plans to hold a thanksgiving service to coincide with the end of the amnesty period.

The ecumenical thanksgiving, prayer and praise service will be held at the Saint Barnabas Cathedral tonight.

Christians throughout the country have been praying for militants and people in authority to readily surrender their arms and stolen property.
