35 of 141 bills become law

Of the 69 bills introduced in the Senate, 13 were signed into law and six were vetoed by the governor.

Nineteen were passed by the House of Representatives while 23 are still pending there, including those that seek to amend the government’s retirement program.

Of the 72 House bills transmitted to the Senate, 47 were passed by senators but only 22 were signed into law by the governor while three were vetoed.

Twenty-six House bills are still pending in the Senate while one, House Bill 17-55, or the Saipan casino legalization bill was defeated last September.

Six Senate legislative initiatives are still in Senate or House committees.

These initiatives include Sen. Luis P. Crisostimo’s proposal to amend Article 12 to allow 99 years permanent and long-term interests in real property, the extension of term of leasehold and a change in the definition of “Northern Marianas Descent.”

Of the four Senate local bills, two became  law: Sen. Jovita M. Taimanao’s R.L.Bill 17-1, now R.L.L. 17-6, which named Rota High School after the late Dr. Rita Hocog-Inos ;  and Sen. Juan M. Ayuyu’s R.L.B. 1-72, now R.L.L 17-8, amending the cockfighting law on Rota.
