5.2 quake hits Marianas

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake was felt in the CNMI and Guam at about 9:45 in the morning yesterday, but no damages or injuries had been reported in the commonwealth as a result of the tremor.

The quake, described by the Emergency Management Office as a “moderate” one, was located 17 miles west of Rota, 75 miles southwest of Tinian and 90 miles southwest of Saipan.

Rudolfo M. Pua, EMO director, said the government did not receive reports of structural damages, human injuries or disruption of power, water and telecommunications services due to the earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any tsunami alert, Pua said.

The quake had a depth of 129.6 kilometer, according to the U.S. Geological Service’s National Earthquake Information Center.

It was located 45 miles north-northeast of Hagåtña, Guam.

Guam Office of Civil Defense, in a report, said that as of 2:30 p.m. yesterday, there were no reported injuries and utility damages on the island.

The three military installations on Guam—Andersen Air Force Base, the U.S. Coast Guard Marianas Section and the U.S. Naval Forces Marianas—also reported no damages and injuries as a result of the quake.

This is the third major earthquake to hit the Marianas this year.

The first one was in February, with a magnitude of 4.9 in the Richter scale, followed by a 7.2 magnitude quake that caused multiple damages on Guam.
