$50K cash bail set in rape case

Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo  yesterday ordered 35-year-old Rolando P. Mangalinao to observe a 7 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew and to stay away from the victim.

Mangalinao is facing charges of sexual assault in the first degree and sexual assault in the second degree.

Govendo set the preliminary hearing for July 31 at 9 a.m., and the arraignment for Aug. 4. at 9 a.m.

Detective Andrea C. Ozawa of the Criminal Investigation Division, in her affidavit, said they received a call from Guma Esperansa on July 1 regarding a sexual assault incident that took place on June 24 and 26.

The victim, who sought help from the shelter, was confined to the hospital when she was visited by the detective.

No sexual assault evidence collection was conducted because the incident happened almost a month ago.

The emergency room doctor, however, said the victim’s rib was “definitely cracked.”

The victim told police that she and the defendant lived in the same barracks but they had no special relationship.

On June 24, the defendant knocked on the victim’s door and asked if he could come in to watch television.

When it was almost midnight, the victim said she told Mangalinao to leave because she was already sleepy.

He did not leave. Instead, he sat with her on the bed and raped her, the victim said.

He then ran out of the room while she was left crying.

On June 26, while she was sleeping on her bed, the victim said the defendant knocked on her window.

When she ignored him, he knocked on her door. She said she opened it a little so as not to wake up their neighbors, but the defendant pushed the door and went in. She said he raped her again.

The victim said she never consented to have sex with the defendant.
