7 vie for NMC presidency

SEVEN candidates are vying for the position of Northern Marianas College president and each will be interviewed by the State Board of Regents during the next 30 days.

Eighteen applied as of May 10, which was the deadline for the submission of applications.

Vince Merfalen, special assistant to the board, said the identities of the seven finalists are confidential.

He said all of them had met the qualifications—all have a master’s degree from a U.S. accredited institution in business, education, public administration or related fields.

Candidates are also required to have teaching experience, preferably in a community college, and five years of post-secondary teaching experience.

Board Regent Kimberlyn King-Hinds is the chairwoman of the presidential search committee.

The board is expected to announce the name of the new NMC president before classes begin in August.

NMC Vice President for Academic Affairs Barbara G. Moir has been the acting president since April.

Then NMC President Joaquin Sablan resigned in March after serving for two years. He had been with the college for the past 16 years.

Sablan asked the board to reconsider his resignation, but the regents decided to look for a new president citing “technical reasons.” Sablan is now back at NMC as the dean of continuing education.
