9th Teen Poetry Slam set for Feb. 28

Teens 13 to 19 years old are invited to submit and perform their original poetry about teen dating violence and/or healthy relationships.

Coalition communications manager Chaen S. Mendiola said in 2012, they started incorporating the poetry slam event in the observance of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

“We thought this was a great way to engage more teens to not only learn about the issues of dating violence and abuse, but to actively take part in spreading awareness about it and in promoting healthy relationships in a creative way. The event is also an opportunity for us to share resources available to the community,” Mendiola said.

Those interested in competing must email their poems and contact information for review to [email protected] before or on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020.

The competition will have two divisions: 13-15 years old and 16-19 years old.

The winners in each division will receive $100 for first place; $75 for second place; and $50 for third place, Mendiola added.
