Accrediting team has 5 recommendations to KoES

The WASC visiting committee members headed by Roberta Richards stated in their draft recommendations that this system should include gifted and talented students, English language learners students and non proficient math students.

Purungganan said  the recommendations don’t mean that the school has shortcomings.

“These recommendations are part of our continuing program,” she added.

From April 5 to 8, the five-member WASC team made an on-site evaluation and inspection of the school to determine if its deserves another six years of accreditation.

In an interview, Purungganan said the team was impressed with the improvement of the school’s programs as well as the parental and community involvement.

The WASC team  told the school to continue its professional development on effective standards-based teaching strategies for science, math and social studies; and to ensure that classroom assessments are aligned with the standards and the expected student learning results, or ESLRs.

The draft report stated that KoES should continue to analyze data in determining prioritized actions for the school improvement plan; continue the involvement of parents in standards-based education and schoolwide activities; and provide a transition support plan for students.

Purugganan said the school was able to present its strong points, giving them enough confidence that “we can receive another six-year accreditation and get a mid-term visit from the WASC team.”

Among the school’s strengths cited by the team were the strong positive relationship among the school community that ensures cohesiveness in implementing the school’s purpose and mission; and improving student achievements.

The other strengths of the school noted by the team:

• Its standards-based education implementation that includes curriculum maps, lesson plans with ESLRs and are technology embedded, multiple assessments, student portfolios, report cards, checklist and integrated technology in lesson delivery along with maintaining cultural standards.

• Its PeaceBuilders program, a strong character education program, implemented by the staff, students and school community to ensure a safe and nurturing environment conducive to learning.

• Its variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular programs to support student learning and success in academics, sports and extra-curricular competitions.
