Advocates support Tinian peace center

Maia said she sent a “test” proposal to groups attending the 2007 commemoration in Hiroshima, Japan and the responses were all “favorable.”

“The ones that responded were all very much in favor of the plan and agreed with me that no place in the world would be more appropriate for it than Tinian,”    she told Variety in an e-mail interview.

It was from Tinian where the U.S. launched the planes that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the war.

Maia said there were indications that if local officials would support the project, most peace groups would be open to an invitation to take part in the project.

She said she already presented the proposal to the governor and Tinian’s previous and current mayors, but it was never  acknowledged or responded to.

“I’m open to discussing it with anyone or any group that shows interest in the plan,” she said.

In her appeal, Maia said: “It is more important than ever  for those of us who devote our lives and energy to the cause of peace, to gather  in one place, where we can put our heads and hearts together and finally figure out how to disarm our world. Will you join us?”

She said a local benefactor has donated land for the building of the center.

She is also asking for sponsors to fund the upcoming website www.paxtinian.org.

Maia said her proposal has gained support from the island’s general public.

While considering other approaches like a signature campaign and soliciting support from anti-war and peace groups, Maia said it would “all come   down to needing the mayor’s interest and support first.”

She said a peace center will provide a permanent, stable economy for Tinian.

“It would be 100 percent beneficial to locals, unlike either casinos, or a military base, both of which have a serious downside, as well as not helping local businesses,   since purchasing and housing are mainly kept within their purview,” she added.

She said it would also give access to countless federal funds and private grants.

Having a global presence will attract businesses to not only Tinian, but to Saipan and possibly even Rota, she added.
