Airport’s only backup generator breaks down

The Commonwealth Ports Authorities, which is now under the governor’s office, used to have two backup generators for the airport.

For several months now, one of the units has been non-operational due to technical problems.

The remaining unit, which “died” last week, needs major repairs.

CPA’s accounting department is now working on the documents for the procurement of the needed spare parts.

As of yesterday, there was no timeframe for the repair or the delivery of the spare parts.

CPA asked the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. this week to consider the airport’s situation when preparing the power outage schedule.

Yesterday, a 30-minute power outage hit the airport and CPA officials immediately contacted CUC, which switched on the power afterward.

CPA employees interviewed by Variety admitted that the power situation  at the airport not only affects their operations but also the flights that bring in the tourists the CNMI economy needs.

They said CPA and CUC officials are in constant communication to make sure that no particular flight will be affected especially during night time.
