Alcohol factor in fatal car crash

His 29-year-old passenger James W. Mirefel suffered multiple abrasions, lacerations and bruises to the body and is in critical condition. He has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Commonwealth Health Center.

The vehicle they were riding crashed into a ditch along Tun Joaquin Doi Road near the Ladera International School of Saipan on Sunday afternoon.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Subaru Legacy was traveling downhill westbound on Tun Joaquin Doi Road when it ran off the road into the westbound shoulder and struck the concrete bridge of a gutter.

Ogumoro said traffic and patrol units were immediately dispatched to the crash scene, as well as medics and traffic investigators.

Medics transported the two occupants of the car to the hospital.

She said the weather was cloudy and the road surface was wet at the time of the accident. Speed may also have been a factor.

“This case is pending further investigation,” Ogumoro said.

She added that the Subaru suffered extensive damage to its front and middle portions.
