“I am resigning effective this Friday,” San Nicolas told the Variety. The lawyer said he’s going back to private practice.
Before becoming a defense attorney, San Nicolas worked as a staffer for the Legislative Bureau for five years.
He earned his law degree from the William Mitchell College of Law through a combination of scholarships, loans and working part-time.
“I like the practice of law. I like helping people and solving their problems,” said San Nicolas who also takes pro-bono cases on a case-by-case basis.
He said opening his own law firm will be the highlight of his legal career.
Matthew Meyer is the remaining counsel for the House.
He used to be a prosecutor for the Attorney General’s Office and once worked for the Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Air Force.
Senate legal counsel Ian Catlett marked his last day with the Legislative Bureau last Friday.
Catlett previously worked as assistant attorney general before moving to the Legislature as counsel to the House of Representatives.
After his tour of duty from Iraq, Catlett returned to the Legislature and this time was assigned to the Senate.
LB Director Glenna SP. Reyes said Catlett’s work as Senate counsel was temporary because he had other plans.
Catlett earned his international affairs bachelor’s degree from George Washington University and his law degree from the University of Southern Maine.
He also studied in England’s University of Leeds for his master’s.
