CNMI Military and Veterans Affairs executive director Ruth Coleman said Sgt. Ricky Hayes died of illness in December.
Coleman said Hayes served in the Air Force for four years during the war.
“Hayes was cremated and his family waited until he could be given a proper burial at the Veterans Cemetery,” Coleman said.
Hayes was given full military honors by the 386th Military Police, 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, 302nd Quarter Master U.S. Army Reserve.
There are now 32 veterans buried in Marpi.
But Coleman said only 30 grave markers are there because a couple of veterans were buried with their spouses.
Hayes is the husband of Herman’s Bakery assistant manager Anne Guerrero Hayes.
Last Feb. 17, 59-year-old Raul Marx, a long time resident of Rota who died of illness on Jan. 2 at the Commonwealth Health Center, was buried at the Veterans Cemetery.
The fourth to be buried at the Veterans Cemetery this year was Malcolm Weidner of Gualo Rai, a retiree who served the Navy for 30 years. He, too, died of illness.
The CNMI is home to over a thousand veterans, with over 900 staying on Saipan while the rest are on Tinian and Rota.
