APIL concludes Yap meeting

The next meeting will be hosted by Palau in 2011.

The 30th general assembly of APIL will also be hosted by Palau in mid-June next year.

The rest of the APIL members departed on Sunday after they attended a special picnic in Kaday village on Saturday.

The community there hosted the special picnic together with  the Yap Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce.

Among the resolutions adopted by the APIL board are the following:

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-01, requesting the governments of the member entities of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures to recognize Palau for declaring its Exclusive Economic Zone as a sanctuary for all marine mammals. Palau joins 11 other Pacific Island Forum members that have taken steps to effect protection of whales, and  Guam and the CNMI in fully protecting marine mammals within their territorial waters.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-02, complementing and recognizing the Center for Micronesian Empowerment for taking the lead in empowering the underserved by providing the job skills training needs, coordinating training activities with various institutions on Guam in preparation for the military buildup.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-03, encouraging member entities of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures to facilitate, encourage and promote free trade among island countries and states in the Pacific Region.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-04, expressing gratitude and appreciation to the Yap State Legislature for the use of its facilities during the 51st board of directors meeting.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-05, encouraging APIL members to consider participating on trade missions to Taiwan.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-06, requesting the Digital Society Foundation to explore possibilities for improving the delivery of legislative services in the area of information and communication technology and to better serve the legislatures in fulfilling and strengthening their oversight and legislative functions, and authorizing Digital Society Foundation to seek funding from the United Nations Development Program, Pacific Islands Forum, World Bank and other funding bodies on behalf of the APIL for such projects.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-07, encouraging APIL member jurisdictions to explore the medical properties and values of cannabis sativa.

• APIL Resolution No. 51-BOD-08, endorsing PIHOA’s Board Resolution 48-01, declaring a regional state of health emergency due to the epidemic of non-communicable diseases in the United States-affiliated Pacific Islands.
