“I passed the ASVAB [Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery] test with a high score, but I just
couldn’t make the weight requirement to proceed with the enlistment process,” said Villagomez.
Given a meal plan, a workout routine, and the desire to achieve success, Villagomez not only dropped 50 lbs. and shaved 10 minutes off his run time, but was able to realize his dream of enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserves on Dec. 1, 2010 with the 368th Military Police Company.
“I feel stronger than ever before. I was afraid at first, but I was promised that as long as I show up and have the desire to improve, I will get there. After only a month of training, I feel even better and I’m confident that in April when I leave for basic training I will be ready,” said Villagomez.
Villagomez is one of several individuals who participate daily in physical training sessions conducted by Soldiers of the 302nd Quartermaster Company’s Detachment 1.
“The program started because we sponsored soldiers into the U.S. Army Reserve and they needed to meet Army height and weight requirements. It worked out so well that we extended the invitation to all soldiers who wants to get in shape and stay healthy,” said Spc. Joseph P. Villacrusis, Det. 1, 302nd Quartermaster Company.
According to Villacrusis, the fitness routine combines cardio and strength training with meal plans. This goal-oriented approach is tailored to meet individual needs. The sessions are held Monday to Friday, 5 to 6:30 p.m.
“Sessions are free and our only rule is that once you commit, you show up on time, all the time,” said Villacrusis.
The physical fitness sessions are not just beneficial for those getting in shape to join the service, but also for current soldiers who need to meet and maintain the Army standard for height and weight.
“I have been with the program for the past month and I have since passed my Army Physical Fitness Test with flying colors. I still have a lot of room for improvement, and that is what keeps me coming,” said Pfc. Lawrence Larin.
Soldiers and their family members who aren’t interested in the joining the 302nd QM Co.’s fitness group are welcome to use the Army Reserve gym. The gym is open to all military identification card holders and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, unless alternate arrangements are made in advance.
The facility is located within the Army Reserve Center, which is off of Industrial Drive in Tanapag.
