NMI nursing group to host regional conference

(Taro Leaf) — They are the men and women who serve on the medical frontline, right along side your doctors and medical specialists.
Nurses from all over the Pacific basin are coming this June to Saipan as it is the CNMI Nursing Association’s turn to host and organize the annual American Pacific Nursing Leaders Council Conference.
This educational conference invites nursing professionals from American Samoa, Chuuk, the CNMI, Guam, Hawaii, Kosrae, Marshall Islands, Palau, Pohnpei, Yap and Japan to facilitate discussion about the region’s current leading health issues, conduct continuing education classes, host a cultural night, as well as promote and create a deeper appreciation and awareness of the nursing industry to the community.
“We are very excited to have this opportunity and we are going to do our very best as a nonprofit, volunteer group to give the nursing delegations a rewarding and educational experience,” said CNMI Nursing Association vice president Bertha Camacho.
Last year, the conference was held in Guam and the council announced Saipan as the next host as part of the annual rotation among the jurisdictions.
Saipan last hosted the conference 10 years ago.
For over 30 years, the council has served as communication mechanism between the nursing professionals, examined solutions, shared expertise of nurse members, as well as collaborated with partners such as the World Health Organization and U.S. Department of Public Health and Services.
The five-day conference will be held on June 15-19 and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Saipan’ SandCastle with the theme “Nurses Empowering Lives.”
Registration is ongoing now on www.mpnurses.org.
After May 15, the late registration fees will apply, so all nurses are encouraged to register early.
For more information,  contact Bertha Camacho at 664-4853 or e-mail [email protected]

Junior high mock trial on Saturday

(NMI Humanities Council) —Teams of students from around the commonwealth will participate in the annual junior high mock trial on Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m. to noon, in the federal court chamber in Garapan.
This program is hosted annually by the NMI Council for the Humanities to help students develop useful knowledge about the law and courtroom procedures in enjoyable, non-competitive format.
Participating teams representing the prosecution and defense will argue a hypothetical case before Rep. Joseph N. Camacho who will serve as the mock trial judge.
Attorney Teresa Kim will serve as the bailiff.
Teams have been practicing their respective sides over the past few months with the assistance of their teacher coaches and periodic advice received from volunteer attorneys who have served as lawyer coaches.
