High school students explore university life

(NMC) — Nine high school students recently got a taste of university life on Guam as part of the Summer Bridge Program offered by Northern Marianas College’s Educational Talent Search Program.

The program prepares students for college success by exposing them to various elements of being away from home, or more specifically, life transferring to an off-island four-year university.

During their July 19-24 trip, the students visited the University of Guam, where they were given tours and presentations on the departments at the institution. At UOG, the students engaged in a scavenger hunt, in which they matched the university’s departments with their responsibilities.

“All of the students were able to walk away from the program with a better understanding of what’s in store when they transfer to a four-year university,” said Joan Dubrall, ETS advisement coordinator. “They are now focused on what preparations they must make before their transition to college.”

Other ETS staff that accompanied the students on their trip were ETS Director Jeanette Villagomez and Georgia Salas, ETS administrative manager.

The Educational Talent Search is a program that identifies and assists individuals ages 11 and above who have the potential to succeed in higher education.

The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to the postsecondary school of their choice.

Students who want to enroll in the ETS program can visit its office at Building I on the NMC campus in As Terlaje or call 234-5498 ext. 1312 for more information.

Peace ceremony looking for a few ‘Do-gooders’

ORGANIZERS of the 6th Annual Tinian Nagasaki Hiroshima Peace Ceremony launched their “Do-gooder” t-shirt project on Saipan by delivering the order of the t-shirt to the president and board of regents of Northern Marianas College and PDI, as well as the members of the CNMI Legislature, a media release stated.

A special black t-shirt featuring a peace symbol with angel wings was designed by this year’s ceremony organizers as part of a community based effort to raise awareness for world peace and nuclear nonproliferation.

The Do-gooder t-shirts come with special instructions that encourage individuals to do good deeds within their communities while wearing the special t-shirts.

“We ask that people add the t-shirt into their wardrobe, and ask that they make the utmost effort in contributing positively to the community every time they wear the shirts. Perhaps, we can work towards a peaceful world by first striving for a better and more peaceful community. In the aggregate even small contributions from many individuals can result in great changes,” said James Mendiola Jr., one of the organizers of this year’s peace ceremony.

Organizers delivered the first t-shirts to NMC President Carmen Fernandez and college regents during a special morning meeting on the Saipan campus.

The second batch of Do-gooder t-shirts were then delivered to general manager Yoichi Matsumura of Pacific Development Inc.

PDI was selected as one of the first recipients of the peace t-shirts because of its longtime support of peace activities on Tinian such as the annual Tinian Nagsaki Hiroshima Peace Ceremony.

The Do-gooder t-shirts were also delivered to Speaker Arnold I. Palacios and House Floor Leader Joseph N. Camacho.

Do-gooder t-shirts are being sold by the Tinian Nagasaki Hiroshima Peace Ceremony for $12 each with proceeds going toward the purchase of more t-shirts and the maintenance and development of the Children’s Peace Monument on Tinian.

More information on the 6th Annual Tinian Nagasaki Hiroshima Peace Ceremony on Aug. 6, 2008 or the Do-gooder t-shirt project can be found at www.tinianpeace ceremony.worldispnetwork.com.
