Purugganan, a former teacher at Koblerville Elementary School, joined the military in August.
During his training, he was named the education petty officer for his division.
“As an education petty officer, I felt like teaching in the classroom because I get to teach my fellow recruits about the curriculum required by the U.S. Navy. The training was very extensive physically and mentally,” he said.
Purugganan said he is very thankful to have the support of his wife, the acting principal at Koblerville Elementary School.
He also likes to thank the KoES teachers, staff, and students for the letters and cards sent to him.
He said they were not allowed to have communications from anyone during his training except through mail.
The letters he received from his family and from the KoES teachers, staff and students inspired him to excel during his training, he said.
